What to expect? – Dating a Portuguese guy
Hi, I am Iris and I work and live in Portugal. I have the feeling that there a lot of preconceptions about guys from Spain and Italy, but what about guys from Portugal? In this article I would like to share my thoughts and opinion about that. Let´s see if you were expecting this!
*Please note that this is written with irony.
Meet José, the perfect example!
Let me introduce you this pretty person, José. I think you can describe José as a typical Portuguese guy. He grew up Portugal and he is living here his entire life. I know José now for about 1,5 years and out of that I can make some conclusions. Ready?
Doing the laundry
I noticed that José don´t mind to clean or to cook (in fact, the cooking part he is doing really good). There is just one thing that he would never do or touch: the laundry. If he sees the bag with the laundry, he keeps at least 2 meters distance like it is a dangerous animal.
Doing everything together
When I look at relationships of 2 Dutch persons, I see that they have more separated lives. Their own friends, not spending the whole weekend with their partners and having a lot of girls\guys trips. If I look here in Portugal, I always see couples spending time together and hang out (most of the time) with the same friends. Me-time? No, it is we-time.

A real family guy
The most important thing of a Portuguese guy? His family for sure. Don´t be surprised if they call their parents every day and tell them everything. Are you considering going on a date with a Portuguese guy? Please keep in mind that you will need to share him. On the good side: the parents will love you as their own child too!
Very, very tranquil
In another article (Pros and cons of living and working in Portugal) I was already telling you that the life in Portugal is very tranquil. Not only the life, but the Portuguese guy too. They are never in a hurry. A good example is José. His life quote: ´´Tomorrow we say tomorrow. ´´ Is the car broken? We can see that tomorrow.
If you are not dying, it can always wait. On our first date he was about 30 minutes late (yes, really). Thinking of dating a Portuguese guy? Make sure that you have a bit of patience. On the good side: you can always take your time to get yourself ready and hurry doesn´t exist anymore.
Loyal and protective
Where I always heard that Spanish and Italian guys like to look a bit around and flirt a bit, I don´t see this in José or his Portuguese friends. They are very loyal, and you know exactly what you can expect from them. They always feel very responsible for you and they would take a bullet for you. No need for a protection dog anymore!
Romantic and cheesy
Romantic and cheesy? Check. If you look around in
Portugal, you will notice that Portuguese guys don´t mind to be cheesy in Public.
Kissing, holding hands... You have the whole package. In the beginning i needed
to get used to this. He was always joking that I was cold from the inside. At
least he could thaw me. And the romantic side? He will show you amazing places,
greatest sunsets and give you a lot of love. Who don´t want that?
Don´t think I am making fun of Portuguese guys. Guys like José are really amazing and you will have a great experience, I promise you.
I am sorry, This José is already taken, but you can find your own José!
Love, Iris
